TRANSIT FACTS [Total series of 24 cards starts in 2009];
20 –
Since New York’s subway system opened in 1904, fare media has included tickets, coins, tokens and the MetroCard.  The token (in a variety of designs) lasted the longest-from June 1953 to April 2003in the subway and through December 2003 on buses.
21 – The highest subway station is Smith-9th Sts F G in Brooklyn, 88 feet above street level.  The lowest station is 191 St 1 in Manhattan, 180 feet below street level.
22 – The M15 bus carried 17,594,489 people in 2008, more than twice the population of New York City.
23 – NYC Transit buses do not accept paper money because NYC Transit uses giant vacuum hoses to empty the fareboxes, a process that would shred bills.
24 – Subway trains traveled more than 360,000,000 miles in 2008 and made more than 8,300 trips on an average weekday.

TRANSIT FACTS [Total series of 24 cards continues in 2010];
1 –
With 6,400 subway cars, New York City Transit has the largest fleet in the world. NYC Transit also has more subway cars that the combined total of all other subway systems in the United States.
2 – New York City Transit carries an average of 5 million subway customers on a weekday – more than 1.5 billion in a year.  This is the largest passenger count in North America and the biggest ridership figure for the New York subway system in 55 years.
3 – Using buses and subways in New York City keeps 400 million pounds of soot, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and other toxic substances out of the air yearly.
4 – New York City Transit has nearly 900 hybrid-electric buses, more than any other public transit system in the world.
5 – NYC Transit buses carried 738 million people in 2007.  That’s more than the next two biggest bus systems – Los Angeles and Chicago-combined.
6 – NYC Transit was the first public agency in the world to have a bus fleet 100 percent accessible to customers who use wheelchairs.
7 - NYC Transit has 468 subway stations, only 35 fewer than the combined total of all other American subway systems.
8 – In 2000, NYC Transit was the first public transportation system in the USA to convert all its buses to ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.
9 – The A is the longest line in the subway system, spanning 31 miles from 207th St in Manhattan to Far Rockaway, Queens.
10 – The New York subway system carries 1.5 billion people annually.  That’s the equivalent of moving the population of the earth every 4 ½ years.
11 – The first female subway conductor began work on December 28, 1917 during WWI.
12 – The 1976 Bicentennial Transit exhibit proved so popular that it became the New York Transit Museum, the largest museum in the United States devoted to urban public transportation history.
13 – Subway ridership in 2008 was 1.6 billion, the highest since 1950.
14 – During WWII, New York City’s public rail system used light bulbs painted half black.  “Dim-out” bulbs reduced the visibility of elevated rail cars as a precaution against enemy aerial attacks.
15 – The 6 subway line, by itself, is the third largest subway system in the United States, carrying 700,000 customers on a weekday.
16 - If NYC laid all its subway tracks end-to-end, they would reach from New York City to Chicago.
17 – The Jackie Gleason Bus Depot in Brooklyn is the first and only bus facility named for a performer.  Gleason played bus operator Ralph Kramden in “The Honeymooners” TV series.
18 – NYC Transit’s new hybrid electric bus, ECO Saver IV, reduces noise and air pollution, because it not only has fewer engine parts than standard diesel buses, but can run on just battery power 20 percent of the time.
19 – On July 19, 1967, the first 10 air-conditioned subway cars went into service on the F line.  Today, the entire subway fleet (nearly 6,500 carsd) has air conditioning.
