? New York City Transit carries an average of 5 million subway customers on a weekday ? more than 1.5 billion in a year. This is the largest passenger count in North America and the biggest ridership figure for the New York subway system in 55 years.
? Using buses and subways in New York City keeps 400 million pounds of soot, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and other toxic substances out of the air yearly.
? New York City Transit has nearly 900 hybrid-electric buses, more than any other public transit system in the world.
? NYC Transit buses carried 738 million people in 2007. That?s more than the next two biggest bus systems ? Los Angeles and Chicago-combined.
? NYC Transit was the first public agency in the world to have a bus fleet 100 percent accessible to customers who use wheelchairs.
- NYC Transit has 468 subway stations, only 35 fewer than the combined total of all other American subway systems.
? In 2000, NYC Transit was the first public transportation system in the USA to convert all its buses to ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.
? The A is the longest line in the subway system, spanning 31 miles from 207th St in Manhattan to Far Rockaway, Queens.

? During WWII, New York City?s public rail system used light bulbs painted half black. ?Dim-out? bulbs reduced the visibility of elevated rail cars as a precaution against enemy aerial attacks.
? The 6 subway line, by itself, is the third largest subway system in the United States, carrying 700,000 customers on a weekday.
- If NYC laid all its subway tracks end-to-end, they would reach from New York City to Chicago.
? The Jackie Gleason Bus Depot in Brooklyn is the first and only bus facility named for a performer. Gleason played bus operator Ralph Kramden in ?The Honeymooners? TV series.
? NYC Transit?s new hybrid electric bus, ECO Saver IV, reduces noise and air pollution, because it not only has fewer engine parts than standard diesel buses, but can run on just battery power 20 percent of the time.
? On July 19, 1967, the first 10 air-conditioned subway cars went into service on the F line. Today, the entire subway fleet (nearly 6,500 carsd) has air conditioning.
